Google regularly updates its algorithm to make its search results more relevant and quality. Below are major Google Updates:

Panda updates: Google’s panda update is a search filter that was introduced in Feb-2011 for such websites that have poor content to prevent them to rank higher in search results. Aim of Google to introduce this update is to provide relevant information to the users. Google update this panda update time to time to improve it search results. Every time when this is updated it hits such websites that have poor content.

Penguin update: Penguin update was launched by the Google in April-2012. Penguin update was launched to stop ranking such websites that violate Google policy and participate in link farming, link buying and other black hat techniques. Every time when this update comes this affects approximately 3.1% English queries.

Hummingbird: Google launched this update on August-30-2013. This update was Google’s first major update of its type. Google said about the Hummingbirds that “Hummingbird is paying more attention to each word in a query, ensuring that the whole query — the whole sentence or conversation or meaning — is taken into account.”. Thus this update was launched to provide relevant and quality results to user.

Pigeon Update: Google launched this update on july-24-2014. This update was launched to provide more useful, relevant, and accurate local search results.
